Education

Chung earned his MBBS medical degree from Middlesex Hospital Medical School, University of London, in 1975. He became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 1977, was awarded a research MD in 1983, and received a Doctor of Science (DSc) degree in 2001 from the University of London. He was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1992.[1]

Career

Chung has held academic and clinical positions for over four decades. Since 1996, he has been Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Head of Experimental Medicine Studies at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. He is also a Consultant Respiratory Physician at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital.[1]

He previously held appointments as Senior Lecturer and Reader in Thoracic Medicine at the National Heart and Lung Institute (1986–1996), and as a Visiting Scientist at the Cardiovascular Research Institute, University of California, San Francisco (1983–1985).

Chung was a Senior Investigator and is now Emeritus Senior Investigator for the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).[1]

Research

Chung’s research focuses on the pathophysiology of severe asthma, COPD, and chronic cough hypersensitivity. He has investigated corticosteroid resistance, airway smooth muscle function, oxidative stress, and the impact of air pollution and nanoparticles on respiratory health. He has also contributed to defining and studying cough hypersensitivity syndrome.

He has served as Co-Investigator at the MRC & Asthma UK Asthma Centre (Imperial and King's Colleges) and the MRC-EPA Health & Environment Centre at Imperial College.[2] He co-led the European Union UBIOPRED Consortium for severe asthma phenotyping, the MyAirCoach project for mobile health asthma management,[3] and international collaborations on pollution and nanoparticle lung toxicity. He is applying machine learning to mobile health data as an indicator of pollution effects.

Editorial Work and Publications

Chung serves on the editorial boards of The Lancet Respiratory Medicine,[4] Respirology, and European Journal of Pharmacology.[5] He is co-editor of the Journal of Thoracic Disease,[6] and previously served as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Medicine and Clinical Respiratory Disease.[7]

He is the author of over 900 publications and has co-edited books on asthma, COPD, and cough.[8]
