Interwikis (short for interwikimedia links) are links between wikis. These normally show links to articles in other languages, but can also be used in the article text to link to other projects, for example, Wiktionary and Wikimedia Commons.
It is important to have interwikis to other languages. They help people to find more information and other Wikipedias. Most articles on the Simple English Wikipedia have articles in the English Wikipedia.
The process for adding interwikis is now organized through Wikidata. This allows you easily link an article to the same article in all the other languages. You can help add interwikis to other languages if they do not already exist.
Using Wikidata to link between languages
At the bottom of the article, type the code for the language followed by the page title in that language in square brackets. For example, in an article on the Internet, a link to the English Wikipedia would look like this:
en:Internet
'en:' is the language code and 'Internet' is the page title. Remember that the title in the link must be the same as the title in the language you are linking to.
You might find a list of links to put on a page at the bottom of the articles on the English Wikipedia. Links to other languages are always in alphabetical order.
When you have completed all that, preview the article: the link should appear in the left-hand toolbar.
User pages
Adding a link to your user page at another Wikipedia is the same as creating a link for an article. If your user name on the English Wikipedia is "Example", then you would add en:User:Example at the bottom of your user page. If you also had the same user name on the Japanese Wikipedia, you would add ja:User:Example (ja: is the language code for Japanese).
Note
If you are not adding a link to show it up at "In other languages" of the sidebar, please remember to add a colon (:) at the front of the language code. For example, if you are linking to the English Wikipedia's Internet article, use the following code:
:en:Internet
Linking to other Wikimedia projects
First of all, check Wikipedia:Sister projects to see if a template in your article would work for what you want to do.
If not, find where you want the link in the article, and type the code for the project and the page title in that project in square brackets. You could also type text to appear instead of the link. For a link to the main page of the Simple English Wiktionary, you would type:
Simple English Wiktionary
'simple:' tells Wiktionary what language to display itself in. The link looks like this:
For projects in the same language, just the project interwiki is needed. For example:
Main Page of Simple English Wiktionary
Wiki look like this:
