Lying in repose
Lying in repose or public viewing (AE) is a tradition when someone dies, often of high social stature, whose body is available for public viewing. Lying in repose is different from the more formal honor of lying in state, because they are not involved with the government. Lying in repose are often for athletes, actors, cardinals, popes, senators, and civil servants.
