Major Oak

Major Oak is a very large and old oak tree in Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire. The tree is famous because of the story of Robin Hood. It is one of the best known trees in England.[1]

Age and size
People estimate the Major Oak is many hundreds of years old. The tree has a very wide trunk. In the past, wooden supports were added to help hold its heavy branches.[2]

The Major Oak is protected. The tree is inside a fenced area to keep visitors from walking too near its roots. The National Trust cares for the tree with help from other organisations.[3]
