Martha Layne Collins

Martha Layne Collins (née Hall; December 7, 1936 – November 1, 2025)[1] was an American businesswoman and politician from Kentucky. She was the first female Governor of Kentucky. She was the fifty-sixth Governor (1983-87) after replacing John Y. Brown Jr..[2]

Collins was considered as a running mate for Democratic Presidential nominee Walter Mondale. Mondale, however, chose Geraldine Ferraro for his mate.

Collins was born in Bagdad, Kentucky.

Collins died on November 1, 2025 at a retirement home in Lexington, Kentucky at the age of 88.[3]
