Mel Allen

Mel Allen (born Melvin Allen Israel; February 14, 1913 – June 16, 1996) was a sportscaster who was best known for calling games for the New York Yankees. He was also the host of This Week in Baseball. He started his career as the public address announcer for the Alabama Crimson Tide football before moving to the play-by-play slot.

Allen was the voice of the Washington Senators before coming the play-by-play announcer for the New York Giants baseball. He called games for Mutual, CBS Radio, NBC, and NBC Radio. After being fired by the Yankees, he called part-time games for the Cleveland Indians and the Milwaukee Braves before the Yankees rehired him again as a TV studio host and play-by-play announcer.

Mel Allen has also called football. He called National Football League games for NBC, the Washington Redskins, and the New York Giants. He called the American Football League's Miami Dolphins as well as college football games for NBC.

He also called college basketball games for NBC as well as Jackpot Bowling before being replaced by Bud Palmer.
