Methyl isocyanate
Methyl isocyanate is an organic compound with the molecular formula CH3NCO. It has been used in the production of rubbers and adhesives.
It is highly toxic and irritating. It was the main toxic material involved in the Bhopal disaster.
Physical properties
Methyl isocyanate is a colourless, poisonous and flammable liquid. It is soluble in water.
Hazards
Methyl isocyanate is extremely toxic by inhalation, ingestion and contact in quantities as low as 0.4 ppm.
Exposure symptoms include coughing, chest pain, asthma, shortness of breath and skin damage.
