Mudpuppy
A mudpuppy or waterdog is an aquatic salamander. They belong to the family Proteidae. Mudpuppies make a dog-like barking sound, which is why they are called mudpuppies. Mudpuppies belong to the genus Necturus. They live in Canada and Midwestern United States.

A Neuse River waterdog (Necturus lewisi). These aquatic salamanders are indicators of healthy water since they’re sensitive to low oxygen and polluted waters. The cold doesn’t bother them though. Near-freezing water temperatures stimulate them to find mates.
