He sold the Soviets and Russians many secrets, such as the names of Soviets secretly working for the U.S., American nuclear strategies, and technology. The Department of Justice called his spying "possibly the worst intelligence disaster in U.S. history".[1]
He served 15 consecutive life sentences at ADX Florence, a federal supermax prison near Florence, Colorado. On June 5, 2023, Hanssen was found dead in his jail cell, aged 79.[2] The cause of death was colon cancer.[2][3]
