Biography
Van Russum was born on 31 December 1935.[1] He entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in 1955, with his priestly ordination in 1960.[2] He studied at the Radboud University Nijmegen and completed his doctoral studies in missionary sciences in 1964 with honours, with a study of popular religiosity. After that he became known as a missiologist in various countries on behalf of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.[3][2]
Between 1977 and 2000 he worked as a lecturer, dean and rector at the vocational university in Heerlen and afterwards at the University of Theology and Pastoral Studies. After the university was merged into the Faculty of Theology of the Radboud University, Van Rossum returned to Nijmegen to become a professor of Missiology there.[3] In 2005 he moved to Leuven, Belgium where he was associated with the Father Damien project for fifteen years. The last years of his life he lived in the fathers community in Teteringen.[2]
He was closely involved in a series of publications that the missionary committee of religious people (CMBR) produced.[2]
Van Rossum died in Breda on 6 January 2025, at the age of 89.[3][2]
