Supergirl is the name of several fictional superheroine characters appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The original and most well known Supergirl is Kara Zor-El, also known as the cousin of the superhero Superman.

The character made her first appearance in Action Comics #252 (May 1959) and was created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino. More Supergirl comic books were made in 2016 as part of the DC Rebirth.[1][2]

The character has been played by actress Helen Slater in Supergirl (1984), and by Laura Vandervoort in the TV series Smallville (2001-2011). In 2015, the live-action Arrowverse series Supergirl debuted on CBS and then moved to The CW after the first season and is played by Melissa Benoist. Sasha Calle will appear as Supergirl in the upcoming DC Extended Universe movie The Flash (2022).
