Purpose
These geoboxes were created:
- To provide a means for creating consistently-formatted tables and summarizing information
- To improve navigation between articles within closely-related subjects
- To maximize the ease of creating and upgrading infoboxes
- To improve the ease of transferring information to other language Wikipedias by using standardized, database-like fields

Features

Other guidelines
This general, multi-purpose geobox template duplicates features contained in various other, more specific geography and place infobox templates (like {{Infobox settlement}} for settlements, and {{Infobox protected area}} for protected areas. Editors should not change from one to the other without good reason or broad consensus.
- The use of this template for mountains is deprecated. Use {{Infobox mountain}} instead. The last few instances are being replaced.
- The use of this template for mountain ranges is deprecated. Use {{Infobox mountain range}} instead. The remaining instances are being replaced.
- The use of this template for provinces is deprecated. Use {{Infobox settlement}} instead. The former instances have been replaced.
