Usage

This template is used inline in article prose or in tables and lists to indicate that the text in the first parameter is in the Scots language (also known as Auld Scots Tongue, Broad Scots or Braid Scots, with various dialects). It automatically italicizes the content by default as something other than Modern English.

{{lang-sco|1=|Scots content here}}

The |1= part is optional, if the Scots content does not contain the character "=".

For subsequent occurrences in the same page, the link to the language name should be turned off with |link=n or |link=no:

{{lang-sco|1=more Scots content here|link=n}}

Other dialects, and phases, can be indicated simply by prepending their names, linked or not:

  • [[Ulster Scots|Ulster]] {{lang-sco|1=Ulster Scots content here}}
  • [[Doric]] {{lang-sco|1=Doric Scots content here}}
  • Early {{lang-sco|1=Early Scots content here}}

Such variants are not independently supported with their own lang-xxx templates.

For subsequent occurrences in the same passage (e.g., a series of Ulster Scots to Modern English translations) it may be helpful to also abbreviate the dialect name display with, e.g., |abbr=USc:

{{lang-sco|1=another Ulster Scots example here|abbr=USc}}

Doing so automatically also disables the language name link, as if |l=n had been specified.
