Tomás Díaz Ayuso case

Tomás Díaz Ayuso case was a controversy surrounding Tomás Díaz, Isabel Díaz Ayuso brother, president of the Community of Madrid, for an alleged payment for masks during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Community of Madrid.[1]

The case led to 2022 People's Party crisis, which made Alberto Núñez Feijoo to become People's Party president.

On April 2023, European Court of Justice archived the case.[2]

The case was used in campaign by political party Podemos for 2023 Madrilenian regional election.

A 24-year-old patient was the first case of coronavirus in Madrid on February 25, 2020.[3] On March 14, the national confinement was announced by the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez.

Tomás Díaz is responsible for sales at Artesolar Iluminación S.L., a LED lamps company.[4]

In November 2021, the socialist Assembly of Madrid member Carmen López[5] assured in the plenary session of the Asamblea de Madrid that Tomás Díaz Ayuso "dedicates himself to going to hospitals to suggest to the contracting units which company to hire".[6] She was expelled and by Eugenia Carballedo, president of the Assembly.[7]

As a consequence, the Assembly members of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, Más Madrid, Unidas Podemos and Vox stampeded out of the Asamblea.[8]

On 18 February 2022, after several disputes between People's Party leader Pablo Casado and Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and after on February 16, 2022, some media said that People's Party secretary-general Teodoro García Egea was investigating Tomás Díaz in search of compromising material[9], Casado said the following on Herrera en COPE, a Spanish radio program. After that, national People's Party Twitter page they tweeted:

After it, Isabel Díaz Ayuso posted a statement admitting that Tomás gained 55,850 euros for the masks but says that it is not a commission.[11][12]

2023 Madrilenian regional election

During 2023 Madrilenian regional election, political party Podemos made a poster with People's Party tweet.[13] It said that We [Podemos voters] have to throw them [People's Party] out![14][15][16]

The People's Party denounced Podemos to the Electoral Board for the use of the poster,[17] although the Board rejected the complaint.[18][19]

Secretary of Organization of Podemos, Lilith Verstrynge, explains that this poster recalls Casado's question that "to this day this question remains unanswered."

Former leader of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, shared the poster in a tweet. People's Party campaign spokesman, Borja Semper, responded: "Indicating a citizen in this way, in addition to being indecent, is dangerous."[20]

During this election, Podemos won 0 seats at the Asamblea de Madrid.[21]
