Vulcanization is a non-reversible chemical reaction between sulphur, or another agent, and natural rubber in which cross-links are formed between the molecular chains in the rubber with the aid of the sulphur additive.

The purpose of this is to prevent natural rubber melting in relatively low temperatures, and allows it to become useful in applications where it might be warmed or cooled without melting and distorting.
