On August 6, 2020 a lawsuit in New York said that LaPierre had defrauded the National Rifle Association of millions of dollars.[7][8]

In January 2024 he resigned as CEO of the NRA. In February 2024 the court decided he had spent $5.4million of the Association's money on expensive clothes, private jet flights and other personal items for himself. He was ordered to pay back $4.3million.[9][10]
