Ballard was the album's producer. When Maverick and Warner Bros. Records released the song, it was the album's fourth single (third in the United Kingdom). The words talk about how good lessons are learned from bad decisions. The album title is from this line in the song: we “Swallow it down (what a jagged little pill)".
