In 2011, during the 2011 Super Outbreak, Smithville was hit by a devastating EF5 tornado.
The EF5 killed 23 people and leaving a permanent scar on the ground.
Smithville residents were shocked by the devastation caused by the tornado, a red SUV was picked up and thrown into the town's water tower making a 6 inch dent in the water tower.
Later towards the end of the tornado's lifespan, the tornado obliterated a cemetery and threw the tombstone of Gavin Camiolo into a family’s window.
