AIM-120 AMRAAM
The AMRAAM (Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile) is a medium-range air-to-air missile, which means it is fired from a military plane in order to hit another plane. It is an active radar-guided missile, which means it uses the radar from the plane that used it until it is close enough to activate a tiny radar inside the missile itself.
It has a designation of AIM-120, meaning it was the 120th iteration of a missile launched from planes to hit other planes.
The AMRAAM missile was in development for about 30 years. It was put in service in 1991 and is still used by many countries and aircraft around the world today.
