Abaíra

Abaíra is a municipality in the state of Bahia in Brazil. It is in the center of the state, in a mountain region called Chapada Diamantina.[1]

About 7,301 people lived there in 2022.[1] The town is known for making a traditional Brazilian drink called cachaça.

History

The town started in the late 19th century. It became an official municipality on 22 February 1962. Before that, it was part of the nearby town of Piatã.[2]

Geography

Abaíra is about 590 kilometers west of Salvador, the capital of the state.[1] The town is surrounded by mountains and fields. It has a warm climate with dry and rainy seasons.

Economy

The most important part of the economy is agriculture (farming). Farmers in Abaíra grow sugarcane, bananas, and coffee. The town is very famous for its high-quality artisanal cachaça. Every two years, the town has a festival called Festival da Cachaça to celebrate this drink.
