Antony Sher

Sir Antony Sher (14 June 1949 – 2 December 2021) was a South African-born British Drama Desk Award-winning actor, screenwriter, playwright, novelist and theatre director. He was born in Cape Town, South Africa. He has won two Laurence Olivier Award. He was known for his stage work with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

In 2017, Prince Charles said that Sher as his favourite actor.[1]

Sher and his partner Gregory Doran became one of the first gay couples to enter into a civil partnership in the United Kingdom.[2]

In September 2021, Sher was diagnosed with a terminal illness.[3] He died of cancer three months later in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire on 2 December 2021, aged 72. [4][5]
