Beaufort, North Carolina

Beaufort (pronounced /ˈboʊfərt/) is a town in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. It was established in 1722, which makes it the fourth-oldest town in North Carolina.[1][2]

In 2000, 771 people lived in Beaufort. The town is the county seat of Carteret County.[3] It is sometimes confused with Beaufort in South Carolina. However, the two names are pronounced differently.

Beaufort is in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. The North Carolina Maritime Museum is in Beaufort.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.5 square miles (9.2 km²). About 2.7 square miles (7.1 km²) of it is land and 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²) of it (22.82%) is water.
