User:Justin DUACE

There is something up with this user. The grammar on their user page is way off, they are stating they have patroller rights, which they do not, they are focussed completely on one article and it is up for RfD, of which they did not correctly add their comments causing a run on sentence, they threatened HockeyCat and now they are posting on my page to not delete things. I am wondering if maybe a CU is needed on this. I wanted to get admin thoughts on this behavior. Thanks. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 18:12, 24 August 2021 (UTC)

@PotsdamLamb: Am I missing something, because I don't think Justin DUACE ever posted to your talkpage? Are you confusing them with User:MMW world? AnApple47 (talk) 18:23, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
I think they may be one in the same. :) (but yes MM posted to my page) PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 18:24, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
Fair enough. AnApple47 (talk) 18:28, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
What are your thoughts? PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 18:29, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
They do seem to be related enough and the fact that they were both editing on mobile is suspicious. I'm not very familiar with this kind of thing, so you might want to wait for an admin's opinion. AnApple47 (talk) 18:41, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
Ok just wanted to make sure I wasn't reading too much into it as I see a lot of blocked IPs and such on the RfD for this too. Thanks for your thoughts. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 18:43, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
Both blocked as socks of the others socks in that Rfd. -Djsasso (talk) 19:14, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
@Djsasso Thanks! I was not sure if I should have done a CU. I think next time when I see it that bad I will just do that even though I know you can't do anything about IPs but too many similarities. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 19:17, 24 August 2021 (UTC)

New Stub

Hello admins! Would you be ok if I created a stub for flowers or something close to it? There are some articles that deal with flowers and such that are stubs but the best I can do is just the standard stub, but I think getting these a little more refined can help with putting them in a list for articles to be worked on. I would like to learn to do this, if someone could walk me through it. One example is Mustard plant. Maybe a different word instead of flowers like maybe Plants-stub? PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 20:15, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

Bring it up over on the Wikipedia talk:Simple Stub Project. It has a bunch of rules of thumb that we say should be the case before a new stub is created. Things like there needs to be over 1000 articles already that would need the stub. There needs to be multiple editors already working on expanding flower stubs etc. -Djsasso (talk) 20:32, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
Haha I don't think we need it now. I forgot about Biology-stub which works for me. Thanks for making that change @Djsasso! PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 20:39, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
Yeah I went to the page after I replied to you and was like oh...this doesn't even have the biology stub on it. But yeah plants etc fall under the biology-stub. -Djsasso (talk) 20:40, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
My biology in high school was supposed to disect a frog, I didn't want to. I am more a history person. I think plants got covered in middle school but that was a very very very long time ago. :-) PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 20:58, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

"Projects"

I see we are into another bout of self-announced "projects". One reason we do not have projects is that they distract attention from what we do onto things some think we ought to be doing. We do not have enough people interested to make a proper job of them, and they are just ways of individual editors creating their own sand-pits to play in. Subpages of a userpages are meant to be used to make articles for the wiki, not to evade our collective decisions as to what the wiki should be doing. Macdonald-ross (talk) 11:29, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

Not sure if you are talking about Wikipedia:Wiki Loves Women South Asia/2021 but that isn't really a self announced project. It is a WMF wide initiative to expand articles on women in Asia for the month of September. Something all language wikis should be take part in. Though only editors that are interested of course. If you are just talking about random wikiprojects in userspace then yes, there is pretty much no purpose in creating those as they are never really used and mostly just end up being a place to do busy work. However, in saying that, they usually are in service to creating articles in a particular subject which is the goal of the wiki so as long as they aren't disruptive there is a reason we say to do it in userspace. -Djsasso (talk) 11:35, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
I understand the concern here. So yeah, this is a foundation wide effort for the month. But then what? We can hope to take part and create some articles, but once the effort of the month is over, is there any difference between this and any other Wikiproject? There might need to be a line laid out. Clearly we should encourage the project as it is ongoing, I think the question is what are we left with. When does it become proper to move it to userspace? As soon as the month ends? Maybe we need to give this some time to breathe, let it run the time and hope for participation, and then decide how to move on. --Gordonrox24 | Talk
By "self-announced" I meant the ones on user sub-pages. We differ from En wiki in not having WikiProjects and all that entails. That is one reason we get users trying to set up similar structures on their sub-pages. Macdonald-ross (talk) 14:37, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
Typically with the big ones like this we leave them in Wikipedia space and then each year we change the redirect to the subpage for the new years effort. -Djsasso (talk) 15:38, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

Extend block

Please extend the block of 90. something (its an IP blocked by Auntof6) from 31 hours to at least a week. I do not feel that is sufficient. Also at least 24 hours SP Simple Talk so a sock doesn't vandalize. Apply to VIP too. Ely - Talk 07:45, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

Comment   Agree Hockeycatcat (talk) 07:46, 31 August 2021 (UTC)
@Hockeycatcat, Elytrian: There's no need to extend the block to a week. All of the vandalism happened within 20 minutes. In most cases, a 31 hour block is enough for the first block.
Simple talk was vandalised once today, and once yesterday. We typically protect pages when vandalism is at a much higher level. Regards, --Ferien (talk) 09:09, 31 August 2021 (UTC)
I don't agree @Ferien... Also, what do we do to users when an admin isn't online? I had to literally just spam undo and rollback for quite a while. Ely - Talk 16:39, 31 August 2021 (UTC)
A couple things, we rarely protect pages unless its not possible to keep up the undoing, and in those cases it typically has to be many different accounts/ips hitting the same page. If there isn't an admin around you go and find a steward and they can help. -Djsasso (talk) 17:16, 31 August 2021 (UTC)
To basically add onto Djsasso, other reasons pages are protected are:
  1. socking
  2. user pages at user's request
Because after all, this is the encyclopedia anyone can edit (except vandals, LTAs and spambots). Page protection is not something we like to do, but have to if disruption happens. SHB2000 (talk) 05:32, 2 September 2021 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) @Elytrian: you can always see if someone with rollback rights is online by asking on simple talk hey anyone with rollback rights available? Someone will probably respond as there are a lot of us that have that right and we can mass revert the vandalism in one click. Almost all of us watch that page and get emails on any changes. Thanks! Protection and oversight

Protect Joseph Stalin please. Please also oversight the last gazillion versions so Ljupco doesn't use the histories on other websites. Ely - Talk 03:12, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay. I don't think either of these actions are necessary at this time. The vandalism isn't all that overwhelming as to require protection, and the content isn't really worthy of deletion in my opinion. In any case, we know this individual's editing pattern, we know they are going to continue, so our course of action should continue to be revert, block, and ignore. --Gordonrox24 | Talk 01:51, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
It doesn't need oversight, but please do not post oversight requests on wiki and use the email address in future at WP:OVERSIGHT. --IWI (talk) 12:26, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
The oversight doesn't have any personal info. Its just spamming by Ljupco that he uses as wikipedia-sucks.co Ely - Talk 10:06, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
Then I don't think that needs oversight. Just revdels (which can be seen only by admins, stewards and WMFOffice) SHB2000 (talk) 10:25, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
But in saying that, it does need rev del otherwise he'll tend to go onto another project and paste the links to the diffs SHB2000 (talk) 10:26, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

Võ Tuấn Kiệt and La Ngoc Hung

Please delete these cross-wiki spam pages. Thanks in advance. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh (talk) 09:11, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh Place a quick deletion tag which would get it done quicker SHB2000 (talk) 10:27, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
@SHB2000: I did, but that tag was removed. Since 3RR vio may lead to a block, I could not revert anymore. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh (talk) 10:30, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
Oops. Sorry for not looking into that. But 3RR does not apply when reverting spam or vandalism. SHB2000 (talk) 10:37, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
Tag removing can't be count as vandalism/spam, or does the policy here allow that? Anyway, thank you for your help. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh (talk) 11:18, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

New clearing house for cross-wiki spam

Hi,

We have created Wikiproject:Antispam in order to better coordinate between Wikimedia projects when fighting against cross-wiki promotion, covert advertising and undisclosed paid edits. If you are interested by these subjects and you want to become a point of contact for the Simple English Wikipedia, you can add your name on the Contacts tab of the project.
