Antarctica was the last continent to have confirmed cases of COVID-19 and was one of the last regions of the world affected by the pandemic.[1][2][3]
The first cases were reported in December 2020, almost a year after the first cases of COVID-19 were seen in China.[4]

The symbols have the following meaning: "Horizontal stripes of navy and white represent the long days and nights at Antarctica's extreme latitude. In the center, a lone white peak erupts from a field of snow and ice, echoing those of the bergs, mountains, and pressure ridges that define the Antarctic horizon.
