On 16 March, the first case in Tanzania was confirmed in Arusha.[3][4] It was a 46-year-old Tanzanian who had come to Arusha from Belgium.[5]

On 22 March, it was announced that cases had risen to 12.[6]

On 31 March, the first COVID death was recorded, in Dar es Salaam.[7]

Tanzania announced on 8 May that it would stop publishing data on Covid-19 cases and deaths. Since then no new updates have been presented. The death toll was 21 in May, the total number of confirmed cases was 509, and 183 patients had recovered.[8]

The embassy of the United States warned that the risk of contracting Covid-19 in Dar es Salaam was extremely high.[9]
