It was released on March 10, 2020 for the PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. When it was available, the game was free-to-play and supported cross-platform play.[2][3]

Battle Royale and Plunder are the two main game modes in Warzone. Other modes were added at later dates. Battle Royal mode was similar to other games in the genre. The player would fight against other players to try and become the last player standing. The map would shrink after a short time and random items would appear on the map. When the player died, they had a chance to respawn if they defeated another player in the Gulag.[4] Plunder mode had teams work together to try and earn $1 million.[5]

On September 21, 2023, the servers for the game were officially shut down.[6] A sequel titled Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 was released on November 16, 2022.[7] A mobile version of the game titled Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile was released on March 21, 2024.[8]

Reception

The game recieved positive reviews by game critics. Critics said that they liked the large size and variation of the maps, the Gulag, and the ability to have many players playing at once. However, critics and players did not like the massive download size of the game. At the end of it's lifecycle, the game wasn't even able to fit onto a 250GB SSD.[9][10]

Call of Duty: Warzone was nominated for Best Multiplayer Game and Best Ongoing Game at The Game Awards in 2020 but lost to Among Us and No Man's Sky respectively.[11]
