Cher became famous in 1965as part of the singing duo Sonny & Cher.[2] She also became a solo singer and had hit songs like "Bang Bang", "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", "Half-Breed", and "Dark Lady".[3] In the late 1980s and early 1990s, she had more hit songs like "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "The Shoop Shoop Song".

Cher's song "Believe" used Auto-Tune in a new way, which became known as the "Cher effect". It was the best-selling single of 2009 in the US and the UK. She kept releasing music in the 1990s and 2000s. Closer to the Truth (2003) and Dancing Queen (2008) were big successes in the United States.

In the 1990s, Cher was also a popular TV star. Later, she acted in many movies. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the movie Moonstruck. She also acted in Silkwood, Mask, The Witches of Eastwick, Mermaids, Burlesque, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Cher is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She has sold over 100 million records. She is the only solo artist with number-one songs on the Billboard charts in seven different decades, from the 1960s to the 2000s.[4]

She has won many awards, including an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award, and three Golden Globe Awards. She was added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her 1982–1995 tour earned $250 million and was the most successful tour by a female artist at that time.

Cher also supports causes like HIV/AIDS prevention and rights for LGBTQ people.
