When the idea of a full city simulation game first came up, Colossal Order had rejected the idea because they didn't believe that they could properly compete with the SimCity series. They decided to change their minds after they saw an opportunity with the failure of the 2013 SimCity.[7]

In the game, players build a city. They can control many things in the city such as taxes and zoning. With the inclusion of the Natural Disasters DLC, sometimes things such as earthquakes, tsunamis and other disasters can hit and destroy parts of the town. Players can use mods from the Steam Workshop to expand and increase the level's area to build.[8]

There was a sequel game called Cities: Skylines II on 24 October 2023.[9]

Reception

The game was very well liked by both game critics and players. Critics said that they liked the low cost of the game and that it felt like a return to what made the city building genre great.[10][11] Some even said that it had overtaken SimCity as the dominant game in the genre.[12]

Since June 2022, Cities: Skylines has sold over 12 million copies worldwide.[13] It is also the best selling game in Finnish game history.[14]
