The gameplay is similar to the original Club Penguin, but it is in 3D and uses Unity rather than the Adobe Flash platform.
Club Penguin Island received mixed reviews from critics and many negative ones from fans of the original game because of the game's incomplete launch and having less features for non-paying members than the original.[2] The 1.8 update recieved positive reviews for adding fan-requested features and bringing the game to PC and Mac.[3]
Despite this, the continued negative reputation among fans, and competition with other online games, including unofficial versions of the original Club Penguin and former Disney MMO Toontown Online, resulted in the game being a commercial failure.
On September 27, 2018, the game confirmed it was closing.[4]
On December 20, 2018, the game was discontinued, but the final version of the game included an offline mode so players could continue playing offline.[5]
History
Before November 2016, the game was known under the code name as Project: Super Secret. The game was revealed as Club Penguin Island on November 17 in the Club Penguin What's New Blog.[6]
Gameplay
Like the original, Club Penguin Island was divided into various sections. The movement was changed from the original to be more diverse, alongside the addition of a jump button and the ability to ride on a tube.
