Dmitry Torner

Dmitry Torner (Romanian: Dmitri Torner; born 28 August 1980, Chișinău) is a Moldovan social activist and sport executive, as well as the President of the Biathlon Federation of the Republic of Moldova.[1][2]

Early life

Dmitry Torner was born in Chișinău, Moldova. He has a higher economic education.

Torner has been involved in entrepreneurial activities in the field of chemistry and technology since the late 90s.[1]

In 2019, he held the position of head of the analytical department at Chem-Trade (Ukraine), which specializes in the supply of gas and electricity. At the moment he is a consultant to a number of European companies operating in the field of energy, chemistry and technology.[1][3][4]

Sport executive

In January 2021, Dmitry Torner was elected as a President of the Biathlon Federation of the Republic of Moldova.[5][6][7]

After being elected to the post, he initiated a project for the reconstruction of a biathlon sports track in the capital of Moldova, Chisinau. The President of IBU Olle Dahlin supported this project.[8] It is planned to attract Austrian investors to implement the project. The amount of investment, according to preliminary estimates, is 3 million US dollars. Athletes of Moldova note that after Dmitri Torner became the head of the Biathlon Federation of Moldova, many organizational and financial problems were solved.[9]

A year after Dmitry Torner became the head of the Biathlon Federation, Moldovan athletes have significantly improved their results. At the 2022 IBU Open European Championships, biathlete Alina Stremous won a silver medal in the 15 km individual race and a gold medal in the pursuit race.[10] Thanks to this, the Republic of Moldova took the third place in the medal standings of the European Championship. The President of Moldova Maia Sandu stated about high achievements of Moldovan biathlete.[11] The successful performances of Moldovan biathletes at the IBU World Cup and European Championships in the 2021/2022 season allowed them to qualify for the XXIV Winter Olympic Games 2022 in Beijing.[12][13][14]

Personal life

Dmitry Torner is married. His wife is Olga Torner, a founder of the Insider.UA portal, she is a television presenter on the Inter TV channel, a winner from Austria at the international beauty contest for married women Mrs. Universe-2016. The couple has three children: twins David and Eve, as well as a son Alex.
