DescriptionA specimen of Psephurus gladius, Museum of Hydrobiological Sciences, Wuhan Institute of Hydrobiology (3).jpg
English: This is a specimen of a mature Psephurus gladius (Chinese Paddlefish), which is exhibited in the Museum of Hydrobiological Sciences, Wuhan Institute of Hydrobiology of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Detailed information of the specimen is little-known.
A paper published in December 2019 suggested the Chinese Paddlefish was thought to be extinct sometime between 2005 and 2010 based on 210 sightings of Chinese paddlefish during the period 1981-2003, as well as the result that no individual of Chinese Paddlefish was spotted during the latest survey conducted on the Yangtze River during 2017-2018. Thus, it recommended the IUCN to reevaluate the species as EX "extinct" according to its criteria. It has caused widespread discussion online, and some news agencies falsely reported that it was formally declared "extinct" by experts.
