Da sich dort erstmals eine signifikant große Gruppe von Homosexuellen der Verhaftung widersetzte, wird das Ereignis von der Lesben- und Schwulenbewegung als Wendepunkt in ihrem Kampf für Gleichbehandlung und Anerkennung angesehen. Am 24. Juni 2016 erklärte Präsident Obama das Stonewall Inn zu einem National Monument.
