Basado en el ACUERDO NÚMERO 3-1998 DE LA GOBERNACIÓN DEPARTAMENTAL DE PETÉN: Artículo 1°. CREAR LA BANDERA Y EL ESCUDO DEPARTAMENTAL DE PETEN conforme las características siguientes:
A. La Bandera tendrá forma rectangular.
B. Sus colores estarán conformados verticalmente, así: lado izquierdo: VERDE, significa esperanza y nuestros recursos forestales; al centro: BLANCO, expresa pureza y paz; lado derecho: AZUL CIELO, significativo de nuestros lagos, justicia y lealtad.
C. En el centro, sobre el color blanco, llevará el ESCUDO DE PETEN, con las características siguientes: un mapa del Departamento que contendrá en su interior: El Templo Gran Jaguar de Tikal, un árbol, una rama de Xate, Una torre Petrolera y Dos manos, elementos que identifican la actividad cultural y comercial del pueblo.
