English: Wet plate photo around 1864 of Matsumae Takahiro (1829-66), the 12th daimyo of the Matsumae domain, who became a member of the shogun's Council of Elders the following year. Open-minded and able to speak English, he earned the confidence of Tokugawa Iemochi and negotiated with foreigners. However, he was at odds with the anti-foreigner Joi faction as well as the imperial court, resulting in his dismissal from the Council of Elders.
