Fumihito was born in Imperial Household Hospital in Tokyo, He is the younger brother of Emperor Naruhito and the younger son of Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko.

He is the heir presumptive to the Chrysanthemum Throne. He has had the title Lua error in Module:Unicode_data at line 293: attempt to index local 'data_module' (a boolean value). and has headed his own branch of the imperial family.[3]
