Capital Gazette shooting

The Capital Gazette shooting is a mass shooting that happened at the offices of The Capital and the Maryland Gazette newspapers at 888 Bestgate Road in Annapolis, Maryland on June 28, 2018.[1]

The Anne Arundel County Police Department reported that the shooting began around 2:34 PM. Five people are confirmed dead.[2] A suspect was captured by police and is in custody.[3]

Shooting occurred outside the newspaper building.[4]

Five people were killed and several others were injured in the attack. The five who were killed are Rob Hiaasen, an assistant editor and weekend columnist for The Capital and the brother of novelist Carl Hiaasen,[5] community beat reporter Wendi Winters,[6] columnist and editorial page editor Gerald Fischman,[7] editor and sports reporter John McNamara,[8] and sales assistant Rebecca Smith.[9]

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan tweeted that he was "[a]bsolutely devastated to learn of this tragedy in Annapolis," and asking residents to "heed all warnings and stay away from the area".[10] President Trump was briefed on the shooting while aboard Air Force One.[11]
