Howard Johnson (jazz musician)

Howard Lewis Johnson (August 7, 1941 – January 11, 2021) was an American jazz musician. He was known for his work on tuba and baritone saxophone. He also played the bass clarinet, trumpet, and other reed instruments.^[1] He was born in Montgomery, Alabama.

Johnson was known for his sideman work, mainly with George Gruntz, Hank Crawford, and Gil Evans. During the 1970s, he was the live band conductor of the Saturday Night Live Band.

Johnson died on January 11, 2021 at his home in New York City, aged 79.^[2]
