Early life and education

James attended Amphitheatre High School and earned a degree in political science from Brigham Young University in 1992. He then obtained an MBA from Arizona State University in 1994 and a law degree in 1995.[2][3]

Career

James began his career as a tax lawyer at the Arizona Department of Revenue in 1996, eventually becoming Chief Auditor for the Transaction Privilege Division.[4] In 1999, he moved to Arthur Andersen, advising on tax matters, and after the company’s collapse, he joined Deloitte in 2002. In 2003, he started his own tax practice at Gallagher & Kennedy, and in 2014, he moved to The Cavanagh Law Firm.[5]

James is a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel[6][7] and was recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America for tax law in 2021.[8] He is also a board member of the Arizona Tax Research Association,[9] the Arizona Forum for Improvement of Taxation,[10] and the Phoenix Tax Workshop.[11]
