Karl Lehmann (16 May 1936 – 11 March 2018) was a German Cardinal prelate of the Catholic Church. He was born in Sigmaringen, Germany.

Lehmann Bishop emeritus of Mainz, former Chairman of the Conference of the German Bishops and Professor emeritus of theology at the University of Mainz and the University of Freiburg.

From 1971, he was the co-editor of the international journal Communio. He was a member of the board of the Synod of the Dioceses of the Federal Republic of Germany 1971-1975, as well as a member of the International Theological Commission 1974-1984.

From 1983 until his resignation in 2016, Lehmann was the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mainz.

In September 2017, Lehmann suffered a stroke and cerebral herrmohage which left him in need of care, first at hospital and later at home. He died on 11 March 2018 of stroke-related complications in Mainz, Germany at the age of 81.[1]
