MisterWiki

Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:UserLinks/shared' not found. I love to edit Wikipedia. I just simply like to simplify articles whenever I can, and to add pictures to make them goodlooking. I love to revert vandalism quickly when I can, and to add the terrifying {{qd}} template :D Please review me good :-) Diego (talk) 17:34, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

  • Wow, you really make a significant number of contributions every day. I notice that you spend a lot of time doing RC Patrol. I know from long personal experience as an admin on :en that RC Patrol is one of the more thankless tasks that you can do on Wikipedia. In exchange for keeping the wiki clean your thanks is to get anons and problem users harrassing you. It's impossible to be perfect doing RC Patrol (one incident of my own that I remember is that I reverted an anon who added something about a certain phallic-shaped pasta only to discover later that, guess what, there is in fact such a pasta). However, after doing a lot of RC Patrol, it is easy to fall into the trap of seeing only the bad in contributions by new members. Posts such as [1] might indicate that you are in danger of falling into this trap. It's important to keep in mind that anons and new editors add a significant amount (possibly a majority) of new content to the encyclopedia, so one has to be careful to not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I noticed one incident the other day that involved me personally. Ignoring whether the changes were in fact better or worse or whether my behaviour was 100% appropriate (since this is all about you (-: ) I think there is some room for improvement on your part. I decided to make some edits (my first edits here in five years) to two pages to add a small amount of information, rewrite them using what I believed to be simpler language, and fix several spelling and formatting errors. You reverted them wholesale, ignoring the fact that they added useful information and fixed errors. Fortunately I have a lot of experience on :en, so I have a tough skin from dealing with all kinds of people who don't agree with me (-: ; however, if I were a newcomer to Wikimedia projects as a whole, I would have been really ticked off and might consider not contributing at all ever again. I see several other reverts in your history to what appear to be valid edits, so I'm assuming this isn't an isolated incident. When you do RC Patrol, you are the face of Wikipedia to newbies and it is vitally important that they feel that their positive contributions are welcome. This is more important than ensuring the wiki is 100% clean all the time.

While it's pretty easy to determine that some edits (graffiti, profanities, spam, etc.) are unhelpful, there are a lot of edits for which it is harder to tell. When you run across edits like those, you need to either take the time to fix them correctly (i.e. don't just revert them, ensure that you keep the good parts of the edit while removing the bad parts); if you feel that you don't have the time to do them when doing RC Patrol, just leave them. Someone else will come along sometime and look at them and fix them if required. You don't have to feel that you need to fix everything.

I noticed that your account on :en (or at least someone on :en with your username, which since we now have SUL I assume is you) has been warned about following WP:BITE. I would suggest that you read that and WP:FAITH and take them to heart. If you do I think you could be a very strong contributor to this or any project. Questions

  1. Of your contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
Pichilemu is one of my favourite articles, I try to expand it whenever I can.
  2. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
