Las Terrenas

Las Terrenas is a Dominican municipality in the Samaná province, on the north coast of the peninsula of Samaná.

Name

The name Las Terrenas comes from the French La terrienne (the "lady that owns land").[3]

Population

The municipality had, in 2010, a total population of 18,829: 9,776 men and 9,053 women. The urban population was 59.1% of the total population.[1]

Geography

Las Terrenas has a total area of 111.9 km2 (43 sq mi), about 13% of the total area of the province of Samaná.[1] The city is an elevation of 17 m (56 ft) above sea level,[2] and at 48 km (30 mi) to the northwest of Samaná.

Las Terrenas does not have any municipal district.[4]

The municipality of Las Terrenas has the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the municipality of Sánchez to the west and south, and the municipality of Samaná to the east.

Economy

The main economic activities of the municipality are the same as the province: tourism, agriculture and fishing.
