Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, 2024.[1] He appeared in a federal court in New York City on December 19.[2] On December 23, Mangione pleaded not guilty to his state murder charges. Mangione has been indicted on eleven state charges and faces four federal charges.[3][4] The Attorney General of the United States has requested that the federal prosecutor ask that the court sentence Mangione to death (if found guilty).[5]
Since his arrest, Mangione has received support online. Some have called him a folk hero.[6] The support for Mangione is connected with the public's view of the health insurance industry and unfair claim denial practices.[7][8] The case has resulted in some calls for health insurance reform.[9]
Other info: The federal murder by firearm charge makes him eligible for the death penalty.[10]
