Manado
Manado (Indonesian pronunciation: [maˈnado]) is the capital city of the Indonesian province of North Sulawesi. It is the second largest city in Sulawesi after Makassar, with 1.2 million living in the metropolitan area as of 2018.[1] The city is located near the Bay of Manado.[2] The city was well-known for its Christian-majority population and it holds large Christmas celebration annually.
Government
As of 2025, the current mayor of the city is Andrei Angouw, and the vice-mayor of the city is Richard Sualang.[3] The city is divided into eleven districts.
Tourism
The city of Manado is close to major tourism spots.
- Bunaken National Park, a marine park on the west of the city[4][5]
- Christ Blessing Statue, Asia's second tallest and the world's fourth tallest statue of Christ[6][7]
- Several shopping malls such as Manado Town Square, Grand Kawanua City, Kawasan Megamall
- Several lakes such as Lake Tondano, Lake Linow[8]
Transportation
The airport for Manado is Sam Ratulangi International Airport. It has served more than one million passengers in 2025.[9] In 2023 the airport has served more than 45,000 foreign visitors.[10]
Religion
Protestant Christianity is the major religion in the city. More than 60 percent of its populace are Protestant Christians.[11][12]
Cuisine
One of the famous cuisine from Manado is tinutuan, which infamously was included as one of the worst food in the world by Taste Atlas.[13] Tinutuan is a porridge made from rice, pumpkin, and sweet potato or cassava. Spinach, salted fish are sometimes added to the food.[14] Other foods include smoked skipjack, roa fish, forest rodent white rat meat, dog meat, pork, and other food.
