Early history

According to the Ningthourol Lambuba, the Mangangs were a pre-Pakhangba clan that lived in the Loijing Hills, now part of the Koubru-Leimaton range to the west of the Imphal Valley.[2][3] They were among the first ethnic groups in the region and also ruled at Kangla and its surrounding areas. Their region comprised the heart of the Ningthouja kingdom in later periods.[1]

Origin and Settlement

The Mangang tribes belonged to the hive of Tibeto-Burman family around the Hukong (Hukawng) Valley. According to Ibohal Singh, they likely traced the path of the Ningthi river (Chindwin River) to Moriya and continued south of it until they encountered the medieval roads originating from the Arakan course. After traveling a short distance, they turned northward and ultimately arrived at Laimatol in the Loijing range, and settled there.[4]
