Marty Meehan

Martin Thomas Meehan (born December 30, 1956) is an American university leader, politician, and lawyer. Since July 2015, he has been the President of the University of Massachusetts. Before that, he was the Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Lowell starting in September 2007. Meehan is a Democrat who served as a U.S. Representative for Massachusetts's 5th congressional district from 1993 to 2007.

Early Life

Meehan was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, one of seven children. He finished Lowell High School in 1974. Meehan went to the University of Massachusetts Lowell and graduated with honors in 1978, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education and Political Science. In 1981, he earned a Master of Public Administration from Suffolk University, and in 1986, he got a Juris Doctor degree from Suffolk University Law School. He has also received honorary degrees from the American College of Greece, Suffolk University, Green Mountain College in Vermont, and Shenkar College of Engineering & Design in Israel.
