My Little Pony

My Little Pony is a toy and children's entertainment franchise. The first toys were released in 1981 under Hasbro's Romper Room line of toys.[1]

Toys

The toys were first called "My Pretty Pony," but Hasbro changed the name. The My Pretty Ponies were the colors of real horses and could move their ears. They had manes and tails that the player could comb.[1]

Hasbro changed the way the My Little Pony toys look many times. These different groups of toys are called "Generations" by fans and collectors. The second group of toys from the 1980s are called Generation One or G1. There was also a G2 and G3. The toys related to the Friendship Is Magic series are called G4.

Starting with the G1 series, each toy pony, unicorn or pegasus (winged horse) came in bright colors for example pink and blue, and a "cutie mark," or symbol on its rear end. The symbol usually had something to do with its name and personality. For example, the pegasus pony named Firefly had blue lightning bolts for her cutie mark. Fireflies are also called lightning bugs.

First cartoons

In 1986, Hasbro made a cartoon for television called My Little Pony n' Friends to sell My Little Ponies and other toys. In it, the My Little Ponies live in a place called Dream Valley and go on adventures with a human farmgirl named Megan. They have many different kinds of creatures for friends and enemies. The first half of each episode was a My Little Pony story with a song. The second half of each episode was about other Hasbro characters such as the Potato Head Kids, Moondreamers, or Glow Friends, also with a song.

The first My Little Pony movie was a TV special called Return to Midnight Castle, later renamed Escape from Midnight Castle.[1] The My Little Pony movies and TV specials were later shortened, cut into smaller pieces and put on television as episodes of the show.

Second cartoons

In 1992, Hasbro made a cartoon television show called My Little Pony Tales to sell the G2 My Little Pony toys. In it, the characters live in a place called Ponyland.[2] Neither the G2 toy line nor My Little Pony Tales was as successful as G1 in the United States.

2010 cartoon

In 2010, Lauren Faust released a new My Little Pony cartoon series called My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. In this series, the ponies live in a place called Equestria.

Characters

  • Blossom - A lavender earth pony with purple hair and purple eyes. Her cutie mark is eleven of white flowers. She digs in the garden.
  • Blue Belle - A blue earth pony with purple hair and periwinkle eyes. Her cutie mark is a cluster of twelve of periwinkle stars. She adores anything blue.
  • Bow Tie - A blue earth pony with pink hair and purple eyes. Her cutie mark is six pink bows. She loves ribbons. In 2005, she is white with pink, purple, and blue hair, purple and blue eyes with a purple heart, and a pink heart hoof. Her cutie mark is pink, purple, and blue bowties. She flies kites.
  • Bubbles - A yellow earth pony with blue hair and blue eyes. Her cutie mark is 4 blue and 5 green bubbles. She takes baths.
  • Butterscotch - A yellow earth pony with golden brown hair and golden brown eyes. Her cutie mark is seven orange butterflies. She plays hide and seek with the butterflies and honeybees. In 2003, she is gold with yellow hair with iridescent tinsel, two-tone gold eyes with an orange heart symbol, and a red hoof heart. Her cutie mark is two orange lollies with green sticks with green ribbons tied around them. She loves sharing her memories.
  • Cotton Candy - A pink earth pony with pink hair and lavender eyes. Her cutie mark is forty white spots. She eats flowers. In 2003, she is pink with blue, fading pink, and white hair, blue and pink eyes with a yellow heart symbol, and a pink hoof heart. Her cutie mark is pink cotton candy on a green stick. She cooks treats.
  • Firefly - A pink pegasus pony with blue hair and purple eyes. Her cutie mark is two glittery blue lightning bolts. She flies around.
  • Glory - A white unicorn pony with violet hair with a sky blue streak in her mane and blue eyes. Her cutie mark is a purple and silver shooting star. She is the most elegant of the creatures.
  • Medley - A turquise pegasus pony with dark green hair and blue eyes. Her cutie mark is a group of dark green glittery music notes. She plays music.
  • Minty - A green earth pony with silvery white hair and blue eyes. Her cutie mark is a cluster of eleven dark green clovers. She makes special wishes. In 2003, she is mint green with candy pink and barely pink with iridescent tinsel, violet and pink eyes with a light pink circle, and a pink hoof heart. Her cutie mark is one large green and pink striped mint candy and two smaller mint candies one green and one pink. She tells jokes. In 2013, she is mint green with pink hair and pink eyes. Her cutie mark is three mints. She loves to celebrate holidays. In 2021, she is translucent green with translucent pink hair, blue eyes, and unpainted hooves. Her cutie mark is three pink mints.
  • Moondancer - A white unicorn pony with red hair with a purple streak in her mane and purple eyes. Her cutie mark is a silver moon surrounded by eight red stars. She breaks spells. In 2003, she is a blue earth pony with pale yellow hair, blue and purple eyes with a yellow star symbol, and a yellow hoof heart. Her cutie mark is a yellow crescent moon and stars on a blue background. She has a slumber party. In 2015, she is a pale yellow unicorn pony with red hair with two-tone purple streaks and purple eyes. Her cutie mark is a purple crescent moon with three purple stars.
  • Sealight - A purple sea pony with pink hair and blue eyes. Her fin tips are pink. She swims in the ocean.
  • Seashell - A lavender earth pony with green hair and green eyes. Her cutie mark is green seashells. She loves the ocean.
  • Seawinkle - A blue sea pony with purple hair and teal eyes. Her fins are purple tipped. She sails on a boat.
  • Snuzzle - A grey earth pony with pink hair and blue eyes. Her cutie mark is a cluster of pink hearts. She likes to take a leisurely nap.
  • Sunbeam - A blue unicorn pony with silvery white hair with a pale yellow streak in her mane and aqua eyes. Her cutie mark is a gold sun. She has parties.
  • Twilight - A pink unicorn pony with silvery white hair with a violet streak in her mane and purple eyes. Her cutie mark is nine glittery purple stars. She plays with stars.
  • Wavedancer - A pink sea pony with blue hair and purple eyes. Her fin tips are blue. She catches waves.
