Myawaddy

Myawaddy is a town in southeastern Myanmar, in Kayin State.

Economy: "Shwe Kokko casino, entertainment and tourism complex" was built at a cost $15 billion.[1]

The border crossing (station), between Thailand and Myawaddy, is closed (as of June 2025). There are some problems (as of 2025) in regard to foreign relations between the governments of Thailand and Myanmar.

History

In 2025, Thailand cut "off power, fuel and internet services to ... border regions" including Myawaddy, according to media; Furthermore, Thailand was helping Chinese authorities "against the scam gangs operating from buildings in Myanmar bordering Thailand"; Hundreds of Chinese victims (in Myanmar), were rescued and repatriated; So were hundreds of people from other countries.[2]

Armed conflict

In April 2024, the town was (taken back or) recaptured by government forces.[3]

Earlier that month, there was a battle in the outskirts of Myawaddy;[4] The Karen National Union (KNU) and People's Defence Force (PDF) took control of the town..[5]
