The movie stars Jodie Foster (who also produced it) as Nell Kellty, a young woman who has lived away from people her entire life in an isolated cabin with her mother, in the forests of the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina. When her elderly mother suddendly dies, she has to face other people for the first time in her life.
Liam Neeson, Natasha Richardson, Richard Libertini, and Nick Searcy have supporting roles.
The movie is based on Mark Handley's play Idioglossia.
Nell was released in December 1994. The movie reviews were mixed, however the movie was successful at the box office.

Jodie Foster's performance garnered widespread critical acclaim, earning her the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, in addition to a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
