History

NewsDrum is the latest addition to the portfolio of media organisations operated by the BMI Group of Publications, after BestMediaInfo and BuzzInContent. BMI Publications was launched in 2010.

In its about page, NewsDrum commits to a cleaner news environment. The guiding principles refrain the website from polarisation, slander, or targeting.[2]

On its second anniversary, NewsDrum expanded its offerings with an improved user experience powered by technological advancements, including Artificial Intelligence.[3][4]

A Storyboard18 article stated that this strategy resonated with younger, mobile-centric audiences, and helped NewsDrum earn a place among India’s top digital-only independent news organisations a year later.[5]

Impact and recognition

In its first month, April 2022, the platform published a detailed report documenting how several satellite TV channels aired sensational, unverified claims of an imminent Russian nuclear strike during Russia Ukraine war, misquoted international agencies, and employed inflammatory, communal overtones in both news bulletins and debate programmes.

Within three days, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting issued a comprehensive advisory to all news channels, instructing broadcasters to refrain from provocative headlines, hyperbole, fabricated information, communal colouring of events, and “socially unacceptable language,” all of which contravened the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995.

That advisory marked the first time a government body cited NewsDrum’s findings to curb misleading war reportage.[5]

In July 2024, Hindenburg Research cited NewsDrum’s Adani-media expose first among 40 reference articles in its response to a SEBI show-cause notice. Hindenburg article placed NewsDrum at the top alongside legacy publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and The Guardian.[6]

A few months later, a NewsDrum investigation led Wikipedia editors to remove the “Modi-aligned media” tag from the entries for Aaj Tak, India TV, and CNN-News18.[7]

Leadership

NewsDrum founder and Editor-in-Chief Niraj Sharma has been covered by national and international media houses, including The Times of India, Madhyamam, and RFI, for his contributions towards a cleaner and more ethical news environment.[8][9][10]
