Nguyễn Minh Triết was promoted to the Political Politburo of the Party in 1997 and then leader of the Communist Party in Ho Chi Minh City. In 2000 He launched a campaign against organized crime and corruption that led to the arrest of mafia chief Trường Van Cam known as Nam Cam.
On June 27, 2006, he was elected President of the State by the National Assembly with 464 votes (94.12% of the votes).
